I have an inexpensive wireless adapter able to send arbitrary data. Shouldn't it be possible to have this adapter *simulate* a wireless router? I understand that I could set up an ad-hoc, but for my use (which invloves other devices), ad-hoc won't work.

I understand I won't be able to give I.P. addresses to these devices, but is it at all possible? unsure.gif

Now that it in the right section, yes it is possible. Ive been using my laptop, running linux to act as the AP for my PDA. Giving out DHCP leases etc... However, since my last linux build I havent had time to look into why my card nolonger goes into Master Mode, it took alot of tweaking though, and now i just dont have the time. But in linux i know its possible

Running in Windows i would not have any idea on whether its possible... Would probably depend on the drivers used, however, Im not a windows hardware guru, so have a look around google, someone must have tried it before and posted the reults.

This is easy to do in linux, given your card is supported, just run an "iwconfig <interface> mode Master" command, "iwconfig <interface> essid MYNETWORK" to set the ssid, and so forth. Try a bootable CD like Auditor or Knoppix, if you like it, do a HD install. I'm not sure about windows, though.
