hi,

for those of you who haven't heard of this, visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sfu/ .

this is a fully posix compliant unix subsystem of windows, allowing you to run unix programs natively on windows.

ive been playing around with it, and managed to compile a few progs from source successfully (bash to start with since interix doesnt give you this!).

now it doesnt include an x server and MS suggest usiing Hummingbird for this.

I have installed humminbird exceed, but I do not know how to get interix to talk to hummingbird!

This is the message displayed on typing startx:

CODE

bashWelcome to the Interix UNIX utilities.

DISPLAY=localhost:0.0
%
bash
bash-3.00$ startx
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx[27]: [: and: unexpected operator/operand
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx[34]: [: and: unexpected operator/operand
xinit:  No such file or directory (errno 2):  no server "X" in PATH

Use the -- option, or make sure that /usr/X11R6/bin is in your path and
that "X" is a program or a link to the right type of server
for your display.  Possible server names include:

xinit:  Undefined error: 0 (errno 0):  Server error.

Anyone know what I need to do? Basically i think that startx needs to use the hummingbird x server...

[edit] http://www.interix.com/InteropXserver.htm
This is a version of hummingbird that does all the installation for you, but i already own hummingbird so i dont want to pay again for this.

found the main problem, the default install is missing the file xserverrc in \usr\X11R6\lib\X11\xinit.

so i think my question is how to configure this file to work with hummingbird x server?

Just getting a hold of it now, never used unix before so this should be 'interesting'. If you fancy a chat in IRC im going there now.

Edit: Change of plan my test box is down and if I lose anything on this pc I will actually cry so I might leave it for a bit

well things are looking up a bit.

i have succeeded in getting a bash shell running on xwindows through hummingbird!

next stage is attempting to compile kde...

this involves compiling an obscene number of libraries from source.

currently im stuck on compiliing Qt 3.3...

I get following error :

bash-3.00$ ./configure -platform sco-g++
You don't seem to have 'make' or 'gmake' in your PATH.
Cannot proceed.

my path is:

PATH=C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;F:\SFU\usr\local\bin;F:\SFU\usr\local\qt\bin
;F:\SFU\bin;F:\SFU\opt\gcc.3.3\bin;F:\SFU\usr\contrib\bin;F:\SFU\usr\X11R6\bin;F
:\SFU\usr\local\bin;F:\SFU\usr\contrib\win32\bin;C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visu
al Studio\VC98\Bin;C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\Common\MSDev98\Bin;C
:\WINDOWS\system32;F:\SFU\common;C:\WINDOWS\system32

and in F:\SFU\bin I have make, so I don't know what the error is about...

Looks like more cool stuff there as well

btw, dont forget to post screenshots of kde running when you finished :P

well this is looking like a long hard road...

latest error is on configuring arts-1.4.0.

checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.3) (library qt-mt) not found. P
lease check your installation!
For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log.
Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support!

Thing is I haved specified Qt in the path. Attached in the log file in case anyone has an idea of the problem... I think it might be related to this:

checking if Qt compiles without flags... no.

[edit] sorted this now

just to cheer me up, i thought id post a picture showing how xwindows under MS look:
