Hey all,
i have been trying to set up a VPN Server on my Win XP through "control panel/Network and Internet Connections"..I have done all the steps correctly, i have allowed connections through my firewall, i assigned users the right to connect to my server and generally i have done everything correct..Well, almost everything smile.gif You see, when i connect to my server through an external computer, i connect but i can do nothing more..I mean, i have no access to any shares on my server and i cannot see the external computer in my network neighbourhood..Actually, i can see under "Incoming Connections" 1 client connected..
My server by the way, is not connected on a local network..I just want to create a form of secure "local" network over the internet..Can anyone help me? unsure.gif

Note: I have read somewhere that ADSL routers, with NAT have not the ability to connect through VPN, unless two distinct ips are obtained, but i refuse to believe it rolleyes.gif

Afaik you can set that in the proprieties of your "Incomming Connections panel" there is a point TCP/IP and there you can configure everything. If i remeber this correctly

I found "incoming connections/tcp/ip properties" and the check box that says "allow callers to access my local network" is already checked..I found nothing more..Well, the callers what they have to do to access my "network" resources? and i, the server, am i capable to access resources on the caller's computer?
Reminder: I have not a local network on my server, but i configured it to be a network without any computers attached (through network connections, "this computer connects directly to the internet..I do not have a network yet")
My goal, is to connect two computers over the internet using broadband connenctions on both sides, and have them connected as if it is a "local network"..is there any other way other than VPN? huh.gif
Thanks in advance..

I was not able to get my systems
connected via ADSL to work as
VPN-server. I can not say at this
time, whether this is a problem of
Windows XP or a limit of my
ISP provider on the ADSL-line.

This was my main problem..But i refuse to believe that its not possible..I tried to work it out but i still have problems..Right now i will enable all the "extra" default services which i have previously disabled, and try again hoping it will work..I might also try a non-microsoft VPN packet if i find anything which is for free..
Well, if anyone else has a suggestion/alternative to create a "local" network over the internet please let me know.. smile.gif

I heard openvpn is good. http://openvpn.sourceforge.net

actually the best and easiest way to get a vpn up and running was pptpd. everything besides ipx works fine. and there isnt any encryption yet but thats because i didnt want to recompile my kernel
