Servers - file server/router/shoutcast/squid/etc

Because WindowsXP on a 300mhz-500mhz PC is pretty sluggish. I have linux running on a Pentium1 133 as my home firewall.

ok a hardware firewall is a suggestion, but i already have one in my router smile.gif

go on guys *G*

This might be something you may be interested in. You can put it in a DMZ and see whats going on. Depending on where your at you may want to include a banner just for safety's sake.

HoneyD or you can try the Honey D Linux ToolKit. You may also want to look at Labrea Tar Pit

If your interested in playing with IDS, you may want to look at Prelude IDS

Just some ideas for you.

Yes, i have too a openBSD box as a firewall with pf and pfstat. This mahine aims to protect and give internet connection to my others computers ( 1 linux box and windows xp dry.gif ... ) !

It's pretty secure i thing, better than windows and extremely configurable.

Moreover, this kind of box run on a computer not very powerfull ( 100 Mhz or more ).

It's so very cheaper and secure. However, with this kind of computer you cannot have a graphical interface tongue.gif !

I have installed too, a file system integrity : AIDE and a log checker : logcheck. I will try soon a honeypot, it's a good tools...

Screwing around on, learning the command interface, as an attack victim, attempting to load software before you load it on the "good" box.

FreeBSD is one of my favorite Unix System.

i use the old style of Unix called OpenBSD with Stephanie kernel patch
it's like grsec for linux , but it has many many more features.

OpenBSD indigo 3.5 PARASiTE#2 i386
cyrex@indigo:~ $

cyrex@indigo:~ $ df -h

linux sorry Kuerby hehe (btw greets to you).

for more question about´OpenBSD you can write me a pm

hehe agathos

if i use a nix system then netbsd...
openbsd is netbsd only some changes so...

What's the advantage of ports over portage?
Portage is just the ports system for Linux with an UI.

I've been distro hopping for a while, so i tried suse, red hat, yoper and went back to suse 9.1, each has its own set of pros and cons.
Thing is Linux has given me so much joy in learning how it runs, after this many distros i still feel like a n00bie. But the beauty is you can try LFS and build your own system (which is what i'm trying now - gonna take me a while, a long while, but i bet its gonna be worth it).

http://www.linuxfromscratch.org - for LFS

I use suse 9.1 (I'm Lazy and it does it well) on a 512 RAM box with AMD 2200 (lol i kinda defeated the purpose of what some of the thread was pointing out). I use VMware and use windows inside that to test on. I like Linux because it uses my hardware efficiently, its stable and there are alot of skilled programmers that work hard to keep information/programs free from cost. When I'm not testing windows I'm using Linux for everything else - graphics, chat, P2P, web browsing etc etc, it just gets better and better.

Oh yea, i also think the GUI looks real cool. (pfff i dont use it that much, it just happens to turn on when i power up, i think it wants me to use it, Ok, I'm lazy, i use a gui.... blink.gif )

cool, i'll shut up there wink.gif
