Full Version: Defender Pro 10-in-1

EDIT: Executive summary of this blurb is that you can get a full-blown, 3 license kit of Kaspersky Antivirus Personal 5.0 for $20, by buying Defender Pro 5-in-1!

I have been debating buying Kaspersky AV for testing for a while now. I found "free" versions on the Newsgroups and other sources, but when I'm doing research I always like to use legitimate software if possible. The price on Kaspersky's website has always turned me off, $40 for only 1 year of updates.

Anyway...onto the point. I was browsing around at Wal-Mart while my gf was shopping and while looking at the "latest and greatest" AV versions (2005, woo) I noticed a super cheesy-looking one - "Defender Pro 10-in-1." There was also "Defender Pro 5-in-1." Both were about the same, except 5-in-1 cost $20 and 10-in-1 was $30. Also, 10-in-1 had a few extra features, namely anti-spyware. So I'm checking out the box and notice it is powered by Kaspersky. I also notice the interface is *identical* to Kaspersky Personal 5.0 (http://www.kaspersky.com/personal) , except it has the Defender Pro branding everywhere!

Long story short, I bought it, extracted the AV install file out of the CD, took out the CD, and ran the install executable...it auto-licenses the app for the date that you install it for one year in the future! The box also states you have licenses for up to 3 computers. All that for $30, $10 cheaper, and you get all the other stuff too (firewall, etc)...which may be junk but fun to play with anyway.

Just had to share this with anyone contemplating purchasing KAV...go this route instead. Make sure you get the box that has 2005 on the front so it is KAV Personal 5.0.

Once I test all the other apps I'll update this thread. I am assuming that the personal firewall is Kaspersky's (it hasn't reviewed very well).

I just had a chance to install the entire disc full of stuff on a VMware system.

I have confirmed that Kaspersky is powering both the Antivirus software (Kaspersky AntiVirus Personal 5.0) and the firewall software (Kaspersky Anti-Hacker 1.5). So this is still a good buy!

I recommend buying the Defender Pro 5-in-1 package if you're looking for Kaspersky products. You get 3 legit licenses and both AV and firewall for only $20.

The anti-spyware package was by a company I didn't recognize, and the updates did not work...so I'd only buy this with the plan of using the AV and/or firewall.
