I have been supporting Windows XP SP 2 since its release through Automatic Updates in early August. It seems in alot of cases installing the SP2 will delete your current restore points. But if you perform a manual uninstall from the recovery console the restore points are once again available once the system is restored back to pre SP2 state.
It is a known bug and we are currently investigating the issue

I installed SP2 and got weird reboots without being able to axx my last system restore points. After trying 2 days to get my old windows restored i installed a new fresh windows version which runs now like a charm.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=875350 would have been the fix for you....the option to remove it via the recovery console it what i would have suggested. At least then you would have retained all the data on the drive that you have more then likely lost.
Visit the following sites if you are using these name brand machines for the updates that MUST be installed prior to installing SP2. I found supporting this product when referring to a particular OEM for their updates prior to installing SP2 their support departments are unaware these updates are required before insatalling SP2. Kinda funny since it is their own support sites. Here they are:

If it continues to be an active item I will be sure to update the forum when more information is available.
Dont want to turn this forum and myself into a place to troubleshoot XP SP 2. Just thought it was relevant since most peeps have OEM boxs and this could be valuable for them since the OEM support teams do not seem to be aware these patches are available.
If it helps just one person im satisfied
