Please note that the mechanism to temporarily disable delivery of Windows XP SP2 will be available for a period of 120 days (4 months) from August 16. At the end of this period, Windows XP SP2 will be delivered to all Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1 systems.

Damit:p im going to hate getting sp2 on pc's in my network, the good thing is that my brother cant download @ full speed on a p2p network(if i have understand it the rigth way) that means more speed to me(im using linux) wink.gif

Im defently going to upgrade this pc very soon:p hehe=)

SO, what do you ppl think about SP2?
I bet the hackers will find a way around all the new "securety" stuff MS has built in to the SP2 smile.gif
I noticed that there is already a patch for this max 10 treads.
So what Microsoft is doing whit this 120 days waiting period is giving hackers a better chance to prepare ;-)

i think re-enabling raw sockets could be next on the hitlist even though some things can be adapted to the application layer or malware writers could just implement the rest of the TCP/IP stack that is left out... maybe through drivers but not 100% sure on that one

What new functionality is added to this feature in Windows XP Service Pack 2?
Restricted traffic over raw sockets

its still bug ridden from what I here, and they are forcing people to download it !! good work yet again M$, lets have a vote guys "How long till sp2 only exploit?" Pushing unfinished software out the door is just asking for trouble. I shall be taking them up on the 4 month offer but if its still buggy then then they can take it and shuv it far beyond where the light of our realm shines.

XP SP2 is awesome in my book.

Time to short this company:
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=PIVX.OB

or otherwise known as:
http://www.pivx.com

There are a ton of little "IE protecting" websites that are all going to dry up and be worthless soon. Morning Wood alluded to this on the Full Disclosure list some time ago, and the harsh reality is that PivX and others like it are worthless investments now.

However there will now be some chaos, but eventually standardized payloads will come out that renable all the things MS disables in the name of "security". And with the registry, they can do it quitely enough that the average software isn't going to catch it.

check this out
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

microsoft distributes a tool that can block the automatic download of SP2 until about december 2004 (120 days [4 months] after august 16th)
an unblock functionality is also included
so now you can enable automatic updates again smile.gif

Yes, SP2 is awesome IMO too. The firewall works great and it's highly configurable. I'd much rather have a firewall by MS than by BlackICE or ZoneAlarm (Blech!!!).

Another side effect might be a reduction in spam, if SP2 gets a good rollout it will pretty much kill a lot of zombie machines that are spam relays.

(filtered) SP2 i ran it and it managed to fry a cpu no (filtered) idea how. The box ran fine for 3 months no problems put sp2 on and it was dead in 2 days tested cpu on 2 boards totaly dead. Not to mention sp2 will cut your internet off all the damn time and block stuff you have told it to allow still. and if you want to run another firewall you cant. wont let come online.

other than nmap, I have had 0 problems. :/

I guess I don't know what the problems have been for everyone else cause I just don't see them.
