you should use this.. (normally it should work this way without special modes)

john password.txt

and after that is done.. john -show password.txt
I get like this for the following user/pass combination

# administrator:aH0qcQOVz7e0s
{user name} : {DES hash}

CODE

*****>john rubbish.txt
Loaded 1 password (Standard DES [24/32 4K])
company          (# administrator)
guesses: 1  time: 0:00:00:36 (3)  c/s: 75382  trying: sarant2 - crogros

******>john -show rubbish.txt
# administrator:company

1 password cracked, 0 left

if the pass is cracked already once you won't get the first results.. cause John automaticly checks the POT file and sees it has been cracked before.. so skips it..
I also made a GUI version for john in visualbasic .. it was just a very buggy one and was a while ago.. and I just started VisualBasic by then..
So not perfect.. but .. You can always try ;x
I'll attach it to this post..

You must use a username in the hash file you tell john to crack. If you only have the hashes john load 0 hashes. Im not sure this is your problem but it may be useful. You might post the contents or an example of what is in the pwd file.

CODE
user:password

I think the hash must looks like this.
